Copying Caravaggio
Several years ago I took a painting course (Copying Caravaggio) at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle tutored by Michael Lane. I had become immersed in ceramics for a long, long while and wanted to reset my 2-dimensional faculties again. Slightly obsessed with the methods and techniques, I followed up with his portraiture class. The Caravaggio journey began with a large detail from Saint Matthew and the Angel. The hours spent with Caravaggio have probably taught me more about painting and techniques in greater depth than all my earlier art training combined. As well as Caravaggio, one began to look more closely at Rembrandt, Chardin, Courbet, and Antonio López García for example. This journey continually offers rewards and inducements to be a better painter. I hope that my work conveys my passion and commitment. I've included editorial iconography to this series. I think Caravaggio would approve.
